US Fish & Wildlife Service Conduct Habitat Management Work at Wheeler Nature Park
In November 2021, the City Council authorized signature for an agreement with the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) to conduct habitat management work at Wheeler Nature Park through their Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program. This work is funded through the USFWS partners program, and mainly involves invasive plant removal at Wheeler in order to improve habitat for priority birds as identified by Audubon Vermont. This work is slated to begin in February or March 2022, and will continue until the identified work has been completed or the agreement ends (December 2031). Tax Increment Financing District Update
In November, the City Council approved a City Center TIF District change request. The City is close to the end of the time to finance City Center projects and more is known now then when the plan was first approved. The Council has approved many projects for funding and design – with three completed: Market Street, City Center Park and the South Burlington Public Library and City Hall at 180 Market Street.
Four others are in design: Garden Street (partially approved for construction), Williston Road Streetscape (has $800,000 in Federal Funding), the Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge over I-89 (has $9.7 M in Federal Funding), and the boardwalk connection between Market Street, Garden Street and City Center Park.

City Council Gives Mask Guidance
The City Council last night voted on a resolution to require the use of face coverings in City-owned and operated buildings. Currently, City Hall & the Public Library at 180 Market Street is open to the public, and masks are now required to enter the building. There was also extensive conversation about the use of face coverings/masks in local businesses and in the community. The Council has left the decision to individual business owners.

Since COVID-19, the planned indoor recreation project has been in a holding pattern at the schematic design level. To begin the process to move the project forward, City staff provided a memo to the City Council at their regular Council meeting August 17, with a timeline and process to have the option to place the project on a March 2022 ballot.

Dear South Burlington residents:
As you may have heard, I am retiring as your City Manager on June 30, at 5 PM. Before leaving I want to express my great appreciation for allowing me the honor to serve you these past 8 plus years.

This process occurs each Spring with the goal of making appointments to fill out expiring terms by the end of June with the effective date of appointment being July 1.

On Tuesday, May 25th the City Council rescinded the resolution requiring masks to be worn in public places and in businesses. Moving forward, we will be following the Governor's guidance. Businesses are able to set their own standards for wearing masks on their premises.

Today’s firefighters are expected to be extreme occupational athletes! Firefighters perform many of their duties in an environment that induces extreme physiological and psychological stress. Our work space can be in a dark, hot - 400–500-degree environment while wearing, or carrying 50-75 pound of Personal Protective Ensemble (PPE) and the tools they need to extinguish and then overhaul a fire scene.

South Burlington resident Chris Shaw has been re-appointed by the City Council to represent the City on the Board of Directors of the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) The appointment is for an additional two-year term and Shaw has been selected by the rest of the Board to serve as Vice Chair in the year ahead pending his reappointment.

There has been a delay with when Change of Appraisal Notices will be mailed. Expect to see them mailed in the middle to end of May. The reappraisal will be completed on time and new values will be in effect for the 2021-2022 tax year.
